 Backyard fire pits have grown in popularity over the last several years. From a small metal bowl to an extravagant built-in outdoor fireplace, people have found there's something relaxing about sitting outside on a comfortable night and looking into those flickering flames. It's also a great way to entertain and enjoy some campfire treats with some friends.
The only possible downside to the family fire pit is its inherent danger, so keep these safety tips in mind when using it.
- Find the right location. Stay at least 10 feet away from a house, shed, garage, fence or other structure. Don't forget to look up and make sure there are no overhanging branches from trees that might catch on fire from an ambitious spark.
- Set it on a safe base. Usually a material such as stone, gravel or concrete is the best choice. Never set a fire pit on a wood deck.
- If it is windy or has been particularly dry, it's best to postpone the fire for another time.
- Never use accelerants, such as lighter fluid or gasoline, to start a fire. They can cause a fire to spread out of control quickly.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Always keep a close eye on children around the fire. Don't allow running or playing near the fire.
- When finished, put out the fire completely. A garden hose or bucket of water will do the job, or dry sand will snuff out the flames.
- Wait before disposing of ashes. After at least 24 hours, remove them carefully and place them in a metal container. Never throw ashes in the woods, or any other place where there are combustibles, because they can hold heat for several days.
It's important to know local laws regarding backyard fire pits. Also, some areas have fire bans during dry weather, so find out where that information is posted.
Spending a night under the stars while cooking up some s'mores is better than anything on television. Enjoy your backyard fire pit, but remember to follow these tips to ensure a relaxing, safe evening.
