Many calendars and postcards display a picture of a winter snow-covered roof. But there is a downside to the beautiful snow: Ice Dams.
Midwest residents with an abundance of snow may be familiar with the problem. An ice dam typically forms when snow melts on warm spots on your roof, and the water flows down to much colder areas, where it refreezes. The process of melting and refreezing causes ice to back up under the shingles, causing damaging. The water damage causes roof leaks, and it can also harm your home's interior.
Homeowners insurance policies may cover damage from the ice dams. Still, it is far better to eliminate ice dams from forming in the first place.
To maintain an evenly cold roof:
- Insulate, seal and caulk even the smallest openings in your chimney, plumbing vents, light fixtures, wiring and exhaust fans that may allow house heat to flow into the attic
- Ensure your attic insulation is adequate for your climate
- Safely use a snow rake to minimize the amount of snow buildup following a storm
- Always keep your gutters clear to allow maximum drainage
